Liberation Concert Margraten

The power of Remembrance
This year, the annual Liberation Concert at the American Cemetery of Margraten, carries the theme of Remembrance. Each piece of music we present, remembers the horrors of the Second World War, but also remembers our strengths and hopes. Martinu’s Memorial to Lidice is about the brutal murders committed by the Nazis in the Czech township of Lidice on June 10th 1942. Martinu uses Beethoven’s fate motif, from his Symphony No. 5, to form the basis of this touching orchestral work. Moreover, Beethoven’s famous motif doesn’t you signify fate: the symphony’s famous opening theme is also Morse code for the letter V, for Victory. A beautiful concert to keep fresh the remembrance for younger generations.

Beethoven's Emporer Concerto

An anniversary concert season looks forward as it does backward, naturally. Tchaikovsky’s Third Suite does both. It is the first piece that the South Netherlands Philharmonic ever played, and for this season’s opening it resounds splendidly again, more confident than ever, with chief conductor Dmitry Liss. That same self-assurance can also be heard in Beethoven’s impressive and regal Fifth Piano Concerto: a concerto intended as a tribute to Napoleon. The Turkish soloist Fazil Say knows this work’s tenseness like none other. The Guardian praised his interpretation with five stars and labelled it ‘essential’ for really enjoying Beethoven. And as an added bonus: Liszt’s Les Préludes. The first piece of music that ever was allotted the predicate ‘symphonic poem’.

Skriabin's Prometheus

The sorrows of the Great War
Jean-Efflam Bavouzet was the first soloist who performed with the South Netherlands Philharmonic. Since then, he collaborated with the orchestra as a guest soloist on a regular basis. Now, he shines in Ravel’s famed Piano Concerto for the Left Hand. A true masterpiece, filled to the brim with jazzy elements. Ravel wrote it especially for Paul Wittgenstein, who lost his right arm during the First World War. As a prelude to this concerto, the orchestra presents a special, international commission to one of China’s most prominent composers, Qigang Chen.

Over a hundred years ago, Alexander Scriabin dreamed of a symphony of light, as the natural obverse of a symphony of sound. Back in his day, a dream; nowadays, the South Netherlands Philharmonic makes it into a reality, together with the Blauwe Uur and Toneelgroep Maastricht. With Prometheus the three create a singular, mesmerising, overwhelming total experience of sound, light, colour, and theatre.

The tradition of Schubert and Mendelssohn

How would a Tenth Symphony by Franz Schubert have sounded? Italian composer Luciana Berio asked himself the same question, when the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra commissioned him to finally finish Schubert’s Tenth, based on the sketches that survive by his hand. The result sounds ‘a great, great deal like Schubert’ according to many critics and it carries the long tradition of Mozart and Mendelssohn in it too. Mendelssohn, who with his Reformation Symphony returns to the renaissance music of Lutheran chorales. The young Chinese conductor Lio Kuokman, assistant to the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Yannick Nézet-Seguin, brings all these traditions to life. And naturally, there’s the American-Dutch violinist Stephen Waarts too, the rising star who in 2016 made such an incredible impression with his rendition of Paganini. The Eindhovens Dagblad lauded him afterwards as a ‘musical genius’.

Shostakovich versus Stalin

The beloved chief-conductor together with a violinist who is ‘of a Janine Jansen calibre’, according to the Eindhovens Dagblad. Such are the ingredients for a programme that crawls under your skin. Not to mention that Liss here conducts the work that matters to him the most on a deeply personal level: Shostakovich’s Tenth Symphony. The symphony premiered shortly after Joseph Stalin died and contains a very cynical portrait of the late dictator: intense music that is testimony to the torture and sorrow that Shostakovich underwent during Stalin’s terror. On the other hand, Victorova writes music that sounds like ‘an echo from far-off worlds’. Just like the fairylike and masterful Violin Concerto by Szymanowski.

Simone Lamsma radiates in Bruch

The name of Max Bruch has literally become synonymous to the composer’s most famous work, his First Violin Concerto. This is the most romantic piece in the violin literature and naturally, it has just about everything in store. Full of virtuosity and emotion, going from frail romanticism to rough expressiveness. Especially when it is Simone Lamsma who plays this piece ‘piercingly beautiful’, as the Chicago Tribute put it. The ‘enormous intensity’ with which she plays Bruch, leaves no single heart untouched. Together with the dramatic passions of Schumann’s Fourth Symphony this is a concert to dream of. Be sure to be there, you simply cannot afford to miss it.

Tchaikovsky flirts with Mozart

Mario Brunello beamed as a conductor and as a soloist in the 2016-2017 season, with Haydn’s Cello Concerto. He made such an impression that he now performs far more often as a classical inspirer and soloist. No doubt, this time he conducts an ‘effortless and passionate’ (Westphalia Post) programme, classical through and through, once again. And he also bows the cello in Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations. Did you know this work was based on Mozart? That was why our favourite pianist, Hannes Minnaar, performs Mozart’s beloved Piano Concert No. 21 too, so you can compare for yourself. Conducted by Brunello, this could just become a most intimate interpretation.

A Romantic Christmas

Adelina Hasani isn’t merely a brilliant concertmaster, but a phenomenal soloist too. Together with Dmitry Liss, she is just the right person to demonstrate how perfectly well the warm feelings woven into Brahms’ Violin Concerto seamlessly fit the yuletide spirit. After which, the chief-conductor takes the orchestra along throughout the ‘delightful despair’ of Tchaikovsky’s ever moving Fifth Symphony. Perhaps it is the most beautiful, musical framing of the month of December: a time of warmth, reflection, being together.

Scandinavian Yule

In Norway, the ancient home of Father Christmas, a famous Piano Concerto was written by Edvard Grieg. This concerto, filled to the brim with Norwegian folk melodies, is the cosy blanket, that typical Scandinavian hygge that fits this time of togetherness like a glove. The Russian pianist Boris Giltburg emphasises the concerto’s ‘passion and fire’ as well as the ‘beauty and friendliness’, according to the Australian press. And having Dmitry Liss conduct Tchaikovsky’s Fifth Symphony to boot, there’s really nothing standing in the way of having a very, merry Christmas.

New Year's Concerts

A fireworks of opera, operetta, and Latin music
The South Netherlands Philharmonics‘ New Year’s Concert is just about the only spectacle of fireworks allowed after January 1st. And it’s the very best way to usher in the new year in an excellent humour. This year’s edition is all about the collaboration with the Internation Vocal Competition and makes an exciting expedition to the music of Latin America. The main attractions, of course, are Mozart’s salient concert aria Per questa bella mano with a hilarious duo for baritone and double bass, and let’s not forget about Piazolla’s titillating tangos.

French Composer's Day

For the first time, the Composer’s Day in Maastricht doesn’t cater to one, specific composer, but the language of sounds of an entire culture throughout the centuries. The whole day long we will hear the music of the French composers. From the earliest baroque written during the reign of Louis XIV, the Sun King himself, to the impressionists and the 20th century masterpieces. And everything in between, naturally. The South Netherlands philharmonic brings to you the close of the evening in the most spectacular of fashions: you will hear the grandly orchestrated Turangalîla-Symphonie by Olivier Messiaen. The most important and most impressive symphony of the 20th century, according to many.

Turangalîla: an ode to love

The wondrous world of Eastern mysticism and the love so transparently evoked in Wagner’s Tristan and Isolde: those were the main inspirations for Olivier Messiaen in writing his overwhelming and immensely orchestrated Turangalîla Symphony. An ecstatic symphony in ten movements that became one of the most imposing and characteristic masterpieces of the twentieth century. Why? You’ll only know by experiencing this cathedral of sound for yourself. Messiaen expert Roger Muraro and an orchestra that excels in all echelons make this concert into a must see and a must hear par excellence.

Virtuoso Classics

If there’s anyone who can bring the Viennese classics to life with virtuosity and contemporaneity, it is Mario Brunello. The conductor and cellist plays an angry solo in Spasimo: a beautiful piece for cello and orchestra, in which Sollima embraces the old treasures of Mediterranean culture. Haydn’s Military Symphony sounds as if it was written only yesterday, when Brunello conducts it. And he interprets Tawfiq’s Teramaan as if it were written by Mozart. This Kurdish-Dutch composer already hugely impressed Dutch audience in February 2017, when his Unificazione premiered: a heartfelt call for unity and brotherhood in times of pain and seeking refuge. In Teramaan too, Tawfiq united East and West in such a traditional way, reaching back to Haydn and Mozart, that it seems a new classic is born.

Mahler’s Song of the Earth

Maher and the South Netherlands Philharmonic go way back: they are the success ingredients of an insinuating concert evening. Together with Hans Graf and master soloists Bernarda Fink and Gregory Kunde, the orchestra sets its teeth in Das Lied von der Erde. This ‘vocal’ symphony, based upon ancient Chinese poetry, was written by a Mahler, who was thoroughly tormented shortly after the untimely death of his young daughter Anna Maria. The depressing ‘Farewell’ transpires almost without sound into an everlasting silence. Music that leaves no heart untouched. As a prelude to this masterpiece, the subtle streams of Britten’s Sea Interludes, from his Peter Grimes, resound.

Gershwin and Prokofiev dance

The iconic, Italian jazz pianist Stefano Bollani delivers cutting-edge classical music. He already made a lasting impression with his collaboration with Riccardo Chailly and now, with the South Netherlands Philharmonic, he plays his very own, swinging Concerto Azzuro. Chief-conductor Dmitry Liss takes his cue and performs Gershwin’s swirling Girl Crazy. And together with Prokofiev’s exciting Romeo and Juliet, you’re in for a musical treat and a very special afternoon indeed.

Carnival Concerts

From Limburg, with love. Is there a more fitting theme for this 6 x 11th anniversary edition of the Limburgish Carnival Concert? Conductor Matty Cilissen and a whole arsenal of artists take you on an expedition throughout the province and present for your pleasure the most beautiful and memorable jewels of Limburgish Carnival and the many classics that go with that. An ode to the Carnival tradition that ineludibly has music at its very core. Gilbert Petit (who has won the Limburgish Carnival Cabaret Competition) and Raymond Clement, who made quite the impression last year with his delightful humour, both take care of the comical notes and vaudeville sketches for the adience’s roaring laughter. This year too, we may count on the perfect direction of Servé Hermans of Toneelgroep Maastricht.

Masterfull Classes with Flor

A festive as well as classical concert through and through, with which Claus Peter Flor—who attended last year’s season with a magnificent Schumann—dives into Haydn, Mozart, and Beethoven. The grand classical composers in a row, what’s better than that? In spite of the powerful, final chord in Beethoven’s First Symphony, it is the new harp who steals the show. This empress of the instruments was donated to the South Netherlands Philharmonic by enthusiast Karel Brevet, from Breda. The orchestra’s harp player, Marieke Schoenmakers, lets the new instrument radiate in Haydn’s equally frisky and famous Harp Concerto in D.

The Romantic Bruckner

The shy, but oh so very romantic Bruckner, had always been in love with unreachable women. At wit’s end, he finally devoted his heart to his one, true love: music. Marc Soustrot performs Bruckner’s most beloved symphony, ‘The Romantic’. As none other the honorary conductor of the South Netherlands Philharmonic delivers the Austrian’s work with ‘elegance, charm, but above all, love’. The Korean composer Unsuk Chin wrote her Cello Concerto in commission for the Berliner Philharmoniker, in special devotion to Alban Gerhardt. She combines Eastern refinement with Western Mahlerian and Brucknerian traditions. A concert to fall in love with.

Dmitry Liss leads Brahms

Dmitry Liss knows the vigour and venom of romantic, Russian music through and through, nor does the music by Johannes Brahms hold any secrets for him. Liss knows how to combine the poetic idylls of his Second Symphony with ‘sombre contemplation’. He makes Brahms into an experience, ‘an endearing man of flesh and blood’. And Liss also brings along violinist Sergey Krylov. In early 2017 the duo made a lasting impression with their performance of Prokofiev’s Second Symphony. Now, the Russians interpret Shostakovich’s penetrating First Violin Concerto.

Berlioz' fantastic symphony

The first performance of the Symphony Fantastique was a disaster. Much like Berlioz’ eventual marriage to the actress, for whose affection he pined so greatly that he wrote this symphony as a volcanic expression of his desperate love. Now however, this very first, autobiographical symphony belongs to the best that the French 19th-century repertoire has to offer. Veni, Veni, Emmanuel, by the way, is just as impressive and equally autobiographical. This percussion concerto, also a first, by MacMillan has soloist who performs all across the globe with the winner of the 2014 Tromp Concours, Dominique Vleeshouwers.

Bully for you, Cinderella!
Fairy tales teach you a lot of useful lessons for your adult life. About love and jealousy, about joy and sorrow, friendship, and loneliness. Jacques Vriens, the well-known author of children’s books, tells you, together with the South Netherlands Philharmonic and completely after his own fashion, the story of Elsie, who is nicknamed Cinderella, by her ugly stepsisters. Her life isn’t exactly a fairy tale, far from it, because Cinderella works and works and works. And all that while her stepsisters - who call themselves Hinder Fellahs -always go to the prince’s ball! Elsie’s down in the mouth. Until Fairy Godmother arrives! Accompanied by Prokofiev’s beautiful ballet music, the enjoyment will be double, especially because it’s from Jacques Vriens‘ own bundle of fairy tales. He brings all the classical fairy tales back to live, rife with excitement, enchantment, and humour, without losing sight of the originals. i-Classics Music & Food

La Grande Bouffe is considered one of the most controversial and decadent films in French history. A brutal attack on the establishment, it is also a highly sensuous film. Tickling the senses is what the orchestra, actors of Toneelgroep Maastricht, and WOW Food will do too, in this musical temptation. In short: a seduction with fragrance, colour, taste, and sound. St Mathew Passion

The gospel according to Jos van Veldhoven
Early 2018, Jos van Veldhoven moved on from being the artistic leader of the Dutch Bach Society, which naturally doesn’t necessarily mean that he has banished Bach from his life. It is with pride and joy that we may welcome him at the South Netherlands Philharmonic to conduct his first St Mathew Passion after his valediction. It will be a St Mathew Passion in which the love for and experience with Bach’s music, honed over decades, are the central pillars. A performance in which beloved arias like ‘Aus der Liebe’ and ‘Erbarme dich’ sound more pure and sincere than ever. For the soloists also, with amongst others Rosanne van Sandwijck and Johanette Zomer, are of the highest class.

Liza Ferschtman shines in Bernstein

Liza Ferschtman has built an international reputation with her ‘utmost conviction, spontaneous approach, and mesmerising rawness,’ in the words of The Amati Magazine. In the meantime, she only plays music she really loves. Which is why she returns to the South Netherlands Philharmonic, after her previous, impressive introduction, with Bernstein’s moving Serenade. Like Adams’ Chairman Dances, Bernstein’s music couldn’t have existed without the lasting influence Dvorák had on American, musical culture. Although it’s mainly the Bohemian woodlands that you are transported to when Jamie Philips conducts the Seventh Symphony.

The devil's son Martin Fröst

‘In the past, like Paganini, he would have been called a son of the devil,’ The New York Times wrote in admiration of Swedish clarinet player and conductor Martin Fröst. He raised clarinet virtuosity to an unparalleled level and knows how to combine his excellence with conducting an orchestra. His conducting the South Netherlands Philharmonic is testimony to the orchestra’s high quality. Fröst brings with him his own arrangements of Telemann and Vivaldi, is the stellar soloist in Weber’s First Clarinet Concerto, and tops it all off with Beethoven. It’s already a memorable concert.

The Labèque Sisters play Mozart

Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony and the French siblings Katia and Marielle Labèque in one evening. That’s called Classic, with a capital C. Ever since the late 70s, the piano sisters Labèque have been known as ‘the best piano duo in the world’, according to The New York Times. Especially live, they are unequalled. Now, the duo are welcomed as artists in residence at the Eindhoven Muziekgebouw. The South Netherlands Philharmonic likes nothing better than to share in their enthusiasm, in playing Mozart’s Second Concerto for Two Pianos with these two dynamic sisters. The icing on the cake is Dessner’s accessible Double Concerto—Dessner who himself is the successful, erstwhile composer in residence of the Eindhoven Muziekgebouw. Conductor Karel Deseure leads the passionate piano energy and tops it off with Beethoven’s most famous symphony, the Fifth.
