Who is Berlioz?
One of the most important representatives of Romanticism, the emotionally charged style of the arts. He had a turbulent life. For instance: when he learned that his fancée Marie Moke married an older and richer ‘suiter’, he embarked on a wild journey from Rome to Paris packing two guns and a vile of poison planning to kill Marie, her suiter and himself. Luckily he managed his temper. He stayed in Nice for 20 days (the most beautiful of his life, according to him) and produced an awesome opera there: King Lear. And this is just a small slice of his life!
Symphonie Fantastique is inspired by one of the great loves of his life, and also one of of the most unfortunate afairs. It took him seven (!!!) years for her to ‘accept’ him. What followed was a bitter and unhappy period. Anyway, the Symphonie Fantastique tells the story of an artist gifted with a lively imagination who poisons himself with opium in the depths of hopeless, unrequited love. Today you might say he swipes right and she swipes left. There are no lyrics, so the music ‘tells’ the narrative by lively symphonies. Symphonie Fantastique is considered one of the best symphonies of the 19th century French era.
